MYOPIA

Myopia (Nearsightedness)

Lots of people under 20 have a vision problem called myopia or nearsightedness. This means you can see things up close but have trouble seeing far away, like signs in a store or on the road. To help with this, you can wear glasses, use contact lenses, or even get surgery.

What is myopia?

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, means you can see things up close but have trouble seeing far away. For instance, you might struggle to read road signs until you’re very close to them.

Lots of people have myopia. It’s a problem with how your eyes focus, but you can fix it with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery. Glasses and contact lenses help you see better, and surgery can sometimes fix the problem permanently. It’s essential to see an eye doctor regularly if you have myopia, so they can keep an eye on your vision and recommend the best treatment for you.

How common is myopia?

In India, many people have trouble seeing things far away, a condition known as myopia. It’s becoming more common, especially among kids who go to school. Experts think this will continue to happen in the future.

About one in four parents in India has a child who can’t see far very well. Some eye experts believe that if kids spend a lot of time doing things up close, like reading or using phones and computers, it might make their eyesight worse.

How is myopia treated?

Glasses or contact lenses can help fix nearsightedness in both kids and grown-ups. But for adults (and sometimes for kids in special cases), there are surgeries that can also fix nearsightedness.

If you have myopia, your glasses or contact lenses prescription will have a negative number like -3.00. A higher number means stronger lenses. This prescription helps your eyes focus light properly on your retina, which helps you see faraway things clearly.
