Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is a common eye condition where the thin, clear layer covering the white part of your eye and the inside of your eyelids becomes red, swollen, or irritated. This layer is called the conjunctiva, and it helps protect your eye.

It can be caused by different things. Viruses and bacteria are common causes and can spread easily from person to person. Allergies, like dust or pollen, can also trigger it, especially if you already have sensitive eyes. Sometimes, irritants such as smoke, pollution, or chemicals can lead to pink eye as well.

Depending on the cause, you may notice symptoms like redness, itching, watering, a gritty feeling in the eye, or a sticky discharge that can make your eyelids stick together, especially after sleep. Most cases are mild, but proper care and hygiene are important to prevent it from spreading and to help your eyes heal faster.
